이야기의 잘 알려진 결말에서 해는 나그네의 외투를 벗기고 북풍과의 내기에서 이긴다. 그러나 이 승패에 작용한 것은 단지 해의 설득만이 아니다. 차가운 바람이 멈추었고 햇빛이 계속될 것이라는 가정, 겉옷을 벗어 손에 들기로 한 결정, 외투를 벗는 행위에는 나그네의 판단이 개입되어 있다. 어쩌면 이 이야기는 「북풍과 해님」의 힘겨루기가 아니라, 변화하는 해와 바람이 존재하는 길 위에서 변화하는 ‘나그네의 이야기’로 읽을 수 있다. 전시 《나그네의 외투》는 해와 바람이 있는 옥상을 나그네의 여로에 비유한다. 임채홍이 능동적인 물질로 보는 한지를 매체 삼는 ‘한지 회화’는 ‘나그네’가, 그 회화를 ‘관습으로 바라보는 틀’은 ‘나그네의 외투’가 된다.

물성과 관념성이라는 두 가지 성질의 관계는 전시에 걸린 〈하늘〉 연작에서도 드러난다. 작가는 “이상적 자연관, 원법·준법으로 귀결되는 전통 화론”에 의문을 가진다. 도시화와 기후 위기라는 오늘날의 생활상과 괴리되기 때문이다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 작가는 한지의 물성에 매력을 느낀다. 작가는 〈하늘〉 연작에서 전통 화론에 따라서라면 여백으로 남겨야 하는 하늘만을 전폭에 담는다. 한지라는 매체가 가진 물질과 관념 사이에서 그가 거부하고 수용하는, 비동의와 동의가 교차하고 충돌하는 관계와 이를 결정하는 그의 고민이 드러난다. 이러한 고민을 연장해 전시 《나그네의 외투》에서 작가는 〈하늘〉 연작을 옥상에 “행잉”한다. 전통 화론에서 벗어나, 실재하는 환경의 조건과 상응하며 작품이 변화하는, 다중 시점의 한국화를 그리는 새로운 화법을 실험한다.

이곳에서 〈하늘〉은 프레임을 벗고 하늘에 걸린다. 프레임이 부여하던 전면성에서 벗어나 온전한 양면으로 거듭난다. 바람에 의해 흔들리고, 다시 구겨지고 펴지며, 변화하는 습도와 온도, 빛과 바람을 만난다. 옥상에 존재하는 하늘과 이곳을 찾은 관객의 움직임에 영향을 받으며 다른 모습으로 변해간다. 쬐는 햇빛에 외투를 벗은 나그네처럼, 자신의 외부와 스스로 관계를 맺으며 영향을 받는다. 옥상 위에서 한지는 더 이상 한국화의 관념적 재료나 회화의 평면이 아니라 햇빛과 바람, 시점과 시간, 그리고 우리의 움직임에 따라 변화하는 ‘달라지는 장소’가 된다. 변화하는 한지처럼 회화 또한 바람에 따른 미세한 흔들림에 매 순간 구성이 바뀐다. 회화는 결과물이 아니라 진행 중인 장면으로 선다. 역설적이게도 이곳에서 절대적인 것은, 모든 것은 변화한다는 절대성의 불가능이다. 그러니 작품 사이를 걸으며 〈하늘〉의 비침과 겹침과 주름의 변화를 자신의 움직임과 함께 읽어 내고, 변화와 공존을 체득할 수 있길 바란다.

바람이 부는 순간에는 필요했던 외투가 해가 쬐는 순간에는 짐이 된다. 바람과 해가 무엇인지, 벗겨진 외투가 언제 다시 입혀질지는 모르겠지만, 어쨌든 외투는 입혀진 것이고 따라서 벗을 수 있는 것이다. 나그네와 외투 사이의 가변적인 관계를 보여주는 옥상 위에서 작가를 포함한 우리는 매번 다른 상태의 ‘하늘’과 ‘나그네’를 마주하게 될 것이다. 변화하는 현상과 현상의 이면에서 한지와 한지 회화의 의미를 매번 다시 읽어야 할지도 모른다. “해와 바람과 나그네, 그리고 우리”는 지금 옥상이라는 여로 위에 있다. 외투를 벗기려는 모습을 바라보면서. 벗겨질 외투가 무엇일지 상상하면서. 무엇이 외투를 벗게/입게 했는지 생각하면서.

In the well-known ending of the fable, the Sun strips the traveler of his cloak and wins the wager against the North Wind. However, it is not merely the Sun’s persuasion that dictates this outcome. The assumption that the cold wind has ceased and the sunlight will persist, the decision to take off the cloak and carry it in hand, and the very act of removing it—all involve the intervention of the traveler’s own judgment. Perhaps this tale can be read not as a power struggle between the North Wind and the Sun, but as the "traveler’s story," adapting on a road where the sun and wind are in constant flux. The exhibition The Traveler's Cloak likens the rooftop, exposed to the sun and wind, to the traveler’s journey. In this context, the "Hanji painting"—employing Hanji, which Chaehong Lim views as an active material—becomes the "traveler," while the "framework of observing painting through convention" becomes the "traveler's cloak."

The relationship between these two properties—materiality and ideality—is also revealed in the Sky series displayed in the exhibition. The artist questions "traditional painting theories that culminate in an idealized view of nature, traditional perspective, and brushwork conventions," as they are disconnected from today's realities of urbanization and the climate crisis. Nevertheless, the artist remains captivated by the materiality of Hanji. In the Sky series, the artist fills the entire plane exclusively with the sky, a space that traditional painting theories dictate should be left as a void. Here, between the material and the conceptual nature of the Hanji medium, the intersecting and colliding relationship of his rejections and acceptances, his disagreements and agreements, is exposed, along with the contemplation that drives these decisions. Extending this contemplation, in the exhibition The Traveler's Cloak, the artist "hangs" the Sky series on the rooftop. Breaking away from traditional painting theories, he experiments with a new methodology for Korean painting with multiple perspectives, where the work transforms in correspondence with the conditions of the actual environment.

Here, the Sky sheds its frame and is hung against the actual sky. Escaping the frontality imposed by the frame, it is reborn as a fully two-sided entity. Swaying in the wind, crumpling and unfolding anew, it encounters fluctuating humidity and temperature, light, and wind. Influenced by the sky present over the rooftop and the movements of the audiences who visit, it continuously transforms into different states. Like the traveler who took off his cloak in the blazing sun, the work autonomously forms relationships with its exterior and is affected by it. On the rooftop, Hanji is no longer merely a conceptual material of Korean painting or a flat pictorial plane; it becomes a "changing place" that mutates according to sunlight and wind, perspectives and time, and our movements. Like the changing Hanji, the painting itself alters its composition at every moment with each subtle tremor caused by the wind. The painting stands not as a final product, but as an ongoing scene. Paradoxically, the only absolute here is the impossibility of absoluteness—the fact that everything changes. Therefore, as one walks among the works, it is hoped that they can read the changes in the transparency, overlapping, and creases of the Sky in tandem with their own movements, experiencing this change and coexistence firsthand.

The cloak, necessary in the moment the wind blows, becomes a burden the moment the sun shines. We may not know exactly what the wind and the sun represent, or when the shed cloak will be worn again, but nevertheless, the cloak was put on, and therefore, it can be taken off. On this rooftop, which illustrates the variable relationship between the traveler and the cloak, we—including the artist—will encounter the Sky and the "traveler" in a different state each time. We might have to reinterpret the meaning of Hanji and Hanji painting time and again, amidst the changing phenomena and what lies beneath them. "The Sun, the North Wind, the traveler, and us" are now on this journey of the rooftop. Watching the attempt to strip the cloak. Imagining what the shed cloak might be. Contemplating what caused the cloak to be taken off or put on.
